What is a Bog Host?
Bog Hosts are volunteers who staff the Quincy Bog Nature Center for one three-hour shift per week primarily during July and August. Some Bog Hosts also serve during May, June and September. Bog Hosts serve as the “face” of the Bog and open the Nature Center to the public during their shifts.

What do Bog Hosts do?
Some Bog Hosts walk the trail, others remain in the Nature Center or on the porch during their shift. It’s a great way to spend time enjoying nature and helping introduce others to the natural world.

Bog Hosts meet visitors and

    • Make them feel welcome,

    • Answer any questions that they may have (if possible),

    • Tell them about Wednesday Night Bog programs and weekend nature walks,

    • Point out interpretative materials (trail guides, checklists),

    • Distribute Jr. Naturalist activity books, explain the program to prospective QB Jr. Naturalists and their mentors, and award badges to children who complete the program.

    • Bog Hosts also perform routine administrative duties.

Bog Hosts attend an Orientation Program in June and a final Wrap-up Session in September to talk about the program and about their experiences, questions and suggestions.

How much time does a Bog Host commit to the Bog?
Bog Hosts sign up for a weekly morning or afternoon shift primarily during July and August.

Hours are flexible. Some Bog Hosts spend from 7-10 a.m. or 3-6 p.m., but most come 9-12 p.m or 1-4 p.m. If volunteers are interested and available, the Board would like to open the Nature Center in late May and June, and keep it open during September and early October.
